The last year of the 20th century also marked the retirement of the great man himself.

On 14 November 1999, almost 35 years to the day after his first race start at Lakeside in 1964, Dick Johnson crossed the Bathurst 1000 finish line for the last time as a main driver. Dick chose to share his final race with son, Steven, co-piloting the No. 17 Ford Falcon AU. The father-son duo staged a memorable assault on The Mountain, fighting for the lead throughout the race before eventually finishing in fourth place.
